Air Pollution in
the city
Air pollution is the result of emission in the air of hazardous
substances at a rate that exceeds the capacity of natural process in the
atmosphere to convert, deposit or dilute them.
Main sources of Air Pollution are
- Open burning,
- Industrial emissions
and
- Vehicular emissions.
In India millions of
people breath air with high concentrations of dreaded pollutants. The
air is highly polluted in terms of suspended particulate matter in most
cities.
This has led to Impaired pulmonary functions, Reduced physical
performance and Frequent medical consultants.
Vehicular Pollution In The City
In 1970 there were 80,000 vehicles on the roads in Hyderabad and by 2002
they increased to 12.5 lakh vehicles with an average of 2 lakh getting
added every year.
In 1995 the vehicular pollution was 500 tones per day and this has been
doubled to 1123 tones per day in 2001.
Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board, has declared Charminar,
Panjagutta, Abids and Paradise as Red Zones.
Polluted automobile emissions when inhaled goes directly through the
lungs into the blood stream. It then goes into the bone marrow and
gradually damages the organs without manifesting any clinical signs for
4-6 yrs.
A recent study by National Institute of Nutrition amongst school
children revealed that about 30% of children in Hyderabad are found to
have higher than recommended levels of led toxicity. It is causing
serious health problems like -
1.Inhibition to cognitive development
2.Loss of intelligence
3.Anemia
4.Progressive damage to organs.
Let us clean air...
Inspection and Maintenance of Vehicles
It is possible to reduce 30-40% pollution loads generation by vehicles
through proper periodical inspections and maintenance of vehicles.
The general public should lend their cooperation towards scraping of old
vehicles.
Commercial vehicles more than 15 years old, and auto-rickshaws with
front engine can be banned.
The people should be encouraged to use new vehicles with clean fuels.
Smoke emissions from factories and automobiles can also be reduced by
using catalytic converters and electronic precipitators.
