Hyderabad Scenario:

Environment Protection Training and Research Institute
                                   (10th September,2004)

EPTRI, an independent registered society in 1992 is a premiere agency in advising the state pollution control boards and respective governments in fixing environmental standards. It has earned the recognition of International Agencies like World Bank, UNDP, UNEP etc. For further details please visit www.eptri.com

Certain Alarming Facts:

  • Climate Change
In 1999, the range of temperatures in May was between 36 – 38 °C ,with an rise to 43—44 °C for the current year.

  • Water—‘ elixir of life’
The state of water resources in Hyderabad is alarming as we don’t have sufficient rains and the water resources are getting polluted.

    A very fine example:
“the state of the Hussain Sagar Lake “

In 1956, the lake bed which was at a depth of 13 m ( 39 feet ) was visible from the surface. The water was safe for drinking without purifying it. Today, after about 60 years the lake is so severely polluted that until recently it was difficult to pass by due to the foul odor.

  • Polythene
Polythene is a major threat and a dangerous pollutant since it is non-bio degradable and pollutes land. It acts like concrete and prevents perculation of water into the soil causing a decrease in the ground water reserves. If livestock consume it they die.

  • Ozone Depletion
CFC reacts with ozone and converts it into oxygen. This has led to a thinning in the ozone layer which has led to global warming. The ozone layer has depleted from 8cm to 5cm in some areas.

This has led to an increase in cancer and sun stroke. Global Warming may also lead to erratic weather patterns in the future.

  • Sustainable Development
Development has many side effects. It has led to depletion of environment and increase in toxicity levels. Along with development, it is also necessary to conserve the environment this is called sustainable development. It is necessary to follow sustainable development i.e. development without damaging the environment.
