Effects of
Environment Degradation
Countries around the world are under enormous pressure to produce more
food for their growing populations, while conserving natural resources
and reducing poverty. But these objectives often compete with one
another, forcing countries to chose between food for their people today
and environmental protection for tomorrow.
In many parts of the world, environmental degradation – deterioration of
the natural environment, including the atmosphere, water bodies, soil
and forests – is an important cause of poverty .
The rapidly growing population, along with urbanization and
industrialization has placed significant pressure on India’s
infrastructure and its natural resources. India’s ongoing population
explosion has placed great strain on the country’s environment.
Industrialization and urbanization have resulted in a profound
deterioration of India’s air quality. India has more than 20 cites with
populations of at least 1 million, and some of them - including New
Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata- are among the worlds most
polluted.
Urban air quality ranks among the world’s worst. Of the 3 million
premature deaths in the world that occur each year due to outdoor and
indoor air pollution, the highest number are assessed to occur in India.
The major sources of air pollution is Vehicular emissions and untreated
industrial smoke.
